Day 60 of 365: Again and Again

Again and Again

The weather in San Francisco sucks right now. The lighting has been pretty inconsistent and the subject matter hasn't been all that grand. It also doesn't help the fact that I've been shooting with my rangefinder more.

In Another Place

I hung out with Bladimir, tried to get some shots done for class, chilled out, tried to shoot some personal stuff, ate, drank coffee, conversations, naps, and a lot of walking. Yup.. that was my day. Wasn't really much going on. I'm pretty content on how the day went..

Day 54 of 365: Started at 5 Ended at 9

It Started at 5 ended at 9

Consistently busy throughout the morning. It started at 5 driving towards Fresno and ended at 9 watching my favorite band Farooq play. I was at my busiest trying to develop 17 rolls of film that I have backlogged over the past few weeks. Jesus Christ.. I don't think I want to do that again. Four hours of nonstop developing makes you crave for a sandwich.

Weekly Sunday Photo Challenge: Symmetry

WEEKLYSUNDAY

Hey everyone. This weeks photo challenge was SYMMETRY! For all you architecture photographers out there you probably got this one down. It was a bit of a struggle for me considering the fact that I'm not much about symmetry and more about moment. Again, this was a great exercise for me to expand my photographic eye. I think I got mine down, but we'll see.

The Weekly Sundays Photo Challenge: Illuminate people. Use flash or other light sources

The other day I decided to use the Street Photography Now instruction as a Weekly Sunday Challenge. Most of the people don't understand the importance of using a flash when it is used correctly. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of continuous light sources, but it is something that I've exhausted over the years. You gotta change it up every once in awhile just so that things can become more interesting. I've went on and looked for people to illuminate. It was hard at some point, but it got easier and easier once I kept doing it. I had a couple of shots that I wanted to use, but since yesterday was a day that allowed full acceptance of this method I took the time to look at what I photographed.

My Musical Playlist (A Photographer that Listens and Shoots)

You've noticed in a couple of blogs that I've talked about using music as tool to compose my images. It's a way to help me get into the zone and observe the scene in different angles. Before photography I was a musician. I was the one who was making songs for photographs. I would watch lots of movies, form images in my head, and listen to various types of music to combine a vision of a song I wrote. Before long the interest in photography became more prominent and I was the one shooting for the music. So what's been on my player as of late?

Day 38 of 365: Street Modelin'

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Through Window of Night

Bay Area weather can either be your friend or your enemy. Depending on your situation, whether it be setup shoots or improv capture, you're either prepared or you're screwed. The best advice I can give any photographer is never leave home without a flash. So, today's weather report was rain and overcast skies all day. Most of the rain done it's deed in the morning while overcast skies hovered the city. Most photographers would approach this as letting your f/stop open up to get an overall semi-even exposure. Well.. that wasn't the case for me. I wanted them to pop out! And so I did.... The street wasn't action packed and will it ever be on most Tuesdays, but the people are wearing some interesting clothing right now. I was attracted by the fact that some are trying to dress lighter than usual. I think the public is ready for spring... yeah.. I would be too.

Day 37 of 365: Aimlessly

Aimlessly

It was one of those days where I had a couple errands to take care and a lot of time to kill. The light didn't do it for me, I had no other plans, and I wasn't feelin' up to par with the photo thing. So what do I do? I let myself walk aimlessly. Man... it was quite a trip. I started out finishing up some errands, decided to ride on the bus to Guitar Center (needed to pick up some strings), walked to my favorite tea shop and then I went and played some video games. In between everything I managed to find certain things to photograph. Wasn't my best shots, but it was something to look forward to on an entry. I did notice that certain areas of San Francisco were foreign to me. It told me that I need to expand the width of my travels when engaging the street. My comfort zone is coming back and I need to deplete that from my routine.

The Weekly Sundays Photo Challenge: Long Exposure

Long Exposure: Emergencies

In this Weekly Sunday post Michael Behlen decided to do a long exposure theme. I'm not gonna lie. I sort of panicked just because long exposures weren't something I was good at, but I knew that I had to think about it and make it happen. My first attempt was to photograph streaming lights down the street of my apartment. I realize how lame that was so I thought about it until I had a better idea. I remembered looking at Dirty Harrry's work on some long exposures. He has a unique way of combining two things two become one. So I decided to try that out and the results became of what it was. I had a lot of fun with it.

UPDATE!!

Michael Behlen finally got to post up his Weekly Sunday Photo (computer crashes are not fun at all). Check it out!

Day 35 of 365: Getting Close

Saturday, February 4, 2012

Getting Close

In the first year of photography I wanted to be a fine art photographer. I was more interested in the aesthetics of the image than I was the content. I love the shallow depth of field, the contrasty tones, and getting in close on just random things. I remember the first image that I printed was an image of a metal frame in my old backyard of Fresno. It was a good day out and for some reason the light touched the frame in such a way. I had my camera, I took a couple of minutes observing it, and clicked the shutter. Took a couple of more just in case and went about my day. When I developed the roll and printed out the image I was amazed on the results. It pumped me up to know that I got something right. It became one of my favorite images at the time. Now looking back I kinda miss those days where I took my time clicking the shutter. Maybe I could get into that aspect of photography again. For now.. I'll stick to the streets..

Photographers I've been Following: Dark Arts Doom Crew Edition

For quite awhile I've been following the group Dark Arts Doom Crew on Tumblr. These individuals have a very unique way of presenting themselves as artists. They remind me of the days skateboarders were becoming more in-touch with art than skating. Back then I used skate with a couple of friends in the small town of Lemoore, CA. I would listen to a lot of punk/emo/old school hip-hop stuff to set the mood of my daily skate routines. I would listen to people jam on some stuff and have a collective of friends just skate the town. Now that I am 26, a blogger, photographer, and musician that these people didn't seem to exist anymore until this crew popped up. It wasn't until last night I watched a couple of scenes of the movie "Beautiful Losers" that made me realize that certain skaters that I admired, musicians that I played with, and friends that were part of the whole scene had some sort of artistic vision. They can possibly be much better than any photographer, designer, or artist out there in the commercial world. I am very influenced by the way they work, market, and present themselves as photographers or designers. So who are they... I can name three that I'm inspired by so far.

Forever Homesiq (Juan Gabe)

Juan Gabe, lead singer of Comadre, has known to be the designer for some of the Comadre albums as of late. Just recently he exhibited some of his work at the Grape and Grain Doom Crew show back in January. I know that he's more of a pen and paper kind of guy, but his photography seems to interest me the most. I feel like he uses his images as a canvas for his next designs. He shoots with a Contax P&S, all film. Maybe the d.i.y aspect of his work inspires me. And that's why I respect him.

Siq Shit (Kenny Gabe)

I'm starting to get to know this guy personally as he also a member of Comadre (guitar player). I don't think he knows this, but he's a great writer and photographer. With those combinations that's something to be very proud of. He uses a pretty basic Canon P&S with a off mount flash to document his stuff. His approach is very basic, but he does it in a way that makes me feel like I'm right there in the action. It's great stuff and I hope he continues with it.

Badd Habits (John McCarthy)

John McCarthy is pretty awesome in my opinion. Most of his image titles have a very poetic, but aggressive point of view. Shoots film, uses either an slr or a P&S, and just has a good time with life. I can only imagine the ideas that pop into his head when he thinks of a design. Most of his images are just photos that, I feel, reflect on how he felt that day. John you got some cool capture, but even better when you present your work. I love it.

There are others that you want to check out which include A Love Token and Blood of the Young. Remember that these individuals are part of a community that are out there really making their work happen. They don't waste time, but they have a good time doing what they love. Thanks guys for the inspiration. Hope to kick with you guys again. Until next time....
